“Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand. The sun’s rays do not burn until brought to focus.” – Alexander Graham Bell.
During my secondary school days, one of the experiments I enjoyed most in practical physics was the hand lens experiment. A magnifying glass made of convex lens is used to focus light from the sun on a piece of paper. As the sun rays meet at a point on the paper, the paper can no longer bear the concentrated heat on it and so it gets burned.
The human eye uses a similar principle to achieve focus. The eye lens focuses light through the vitreous humor. The retina receives the image that the cornea focuses through the eye’s internal lens and transforms this image into electrical impulses that are carried by the optic nerve to the brain. Today, I want to teach you how to focus your mind totally on your goals. Having your eyes focused alone is not enough to achieve your goals. Mark Twain said “you can’t depend on your eyes when your mind is out of focus”.
All successful people developed the ability to totally focus their mind on achieving their goals. A person who is not focused will always have a blurred vision about life. You cannot achieve success by trying to do everything that people or situations foist on you. People fail because they have a broken focus. Usually, a broken focus results to broken energy which begets a broken destiny. Successful people don’t do multiple tasks at the expense of their most important projects.
First, you need to define what exactly you want to do and then commit yourself totally to it. Bill Gates once said “if you want to be a great software company, you have to focus on being just a software company”. Don’t commit yourself to so many things at a time, otherwise you’ll end up a jack of all trades and a master of none. Therefore, you must discover your purpose, that is, what you were born to do. The reason you need to discover what you were created to do is that, you will never be fulfilled doing anything different from that which you were custom-made by God to do. The real purpose of life is actually to find life’s purpose and fulfill it.
Secondly, you need to have a clear vision of your purpose in life. Usually, many people make initial progress towards their goal but lack momentum to push forward because they really had no vision. Vision is the fuel for your assignment. You can never feature in a future you didn’t capture in your mind. Without a clear vision, your life is out of focus. Simply blurred! You can only develop self-discipline when you have seen where you are going in your mind’s eye. The ability to stay focused on your goal doesn’t come from outside sources. It comes from a clear vision of what you want to achieve. Taking pills or even employing external motivations alone cannot keep you focused until you have a clear vision of your destination in life. Tony Robbins once said that “Eighty percent of your success is your psychology; the other twenty percent comes from the mechanics.”
Lastly, you must practice until you learn how to concentrate fully on your goal. James Cameron was said to have spent four years just developing the movie “Avatar” which later grossed 2.7 Billion dollars worldwide with 88 awards and 128 nominations. Jesus Christ lived thirty-three and half years preaching just one message “The kingdom of God” which has tremendously changed the world.
You must do everything possible to eliminate distraction. Distraction is the ark enemy of distinction. Did you know that if you pursue two rats at the same time, you surely will catch none? Distractions deform destiny. Imagine a scholar who wants to achieve excellence in his study or career but suffers the “Always Online Syndrome” on WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. He obviously cannot achieve his goals. What many young people do not know is that Success is spelt D-I-S-C-I-P-L-I-N-E. You cannot be successful except you are disciplined and you are not disciplined until you are totally focused on your goal.
Friend, don’t join the wagon of young people who are deforming their destinies with distractions. Cut off every engagement that is not contributing positively to your life. Discard every movie, music, App, gadget or friend that blurs the vision for your life. Take life seriously and you will achieve your goals. Always remember that; NO PRICE IS TOO GREAT FOR GREATNESS!
